  • Description

THIRTY-SIX PEOPLE DIED EARLY THIS MORNING (WEDNESDAY) WHEN A VANGUARD AIRLINER BELONGING TO BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS CRASHED WHILE LANDING AT LONDON AIRPORT. THE CRASH HAPPENED IN FOG.

THE AIRLINER WAS ON A SCHEDULED FLIGHT FROM EDINBURGH TO LONDON. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE AIRLINE SAID THAT MOST OF THE SIX CREW AND THIRTY PASSENGERS - ONE OF THEM A CHILD - WERE SCOTS.

OPERATIONS AT LONDON AIRPORT WERE SEVERELY HAMPERED THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT BY DRIFTING FOG PATCHES. THE ILL-FATED VANGUARD CIRCLED THE AIRPORT FOR ABOUT AN HOUR IN AN EFFORT TO FIND A GAP IN THE FOG. SEVERAL TIMES THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO LAND - BUT ON EACH OCCASION HE PULLED AWAY AGAIN BECAUSE OF POOR VISIBILITY. ANOTHER ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO "TALK DOWN" THE AIRLINER WHEN THE CRASH HAPPENED.

FIRE ENGINES FROM THE AIRPORT FIRE SERVICE WERE ON THE SCENE WITHIN MINUTES OF THE CRASH -- AND THEY WERE SOON JOINED BY UNITS FROM CITY FIRE BRIGADES. POLICE CAME FROM NEARBY STATIONS TO HELP IN THE RESCUE WORK.

LONDON AIRPORT HAS HAD THE REPUTATION OF BEING ONE OF THE WORLD'S SAFEST. THIS CRASH WAS THE WORST IN ITS HISTORY. THE LAST FATAL CIVIL AVIATION CRASH THERE HAPPENED 15 YEARS AGO -- AT ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME SPOT. THAT TIME 28 PEOPLE DIED ABROAD A VIKING AIRLINER.

THIS WAS THE THIRD FATAL CRASH IN BRITAIN THIS YEAR. IT BROUGHT THE CASUALTY TOTAL TO 102.

WRECKAGE ON THE RUNWAY CAUSED FLIGHTS OUT OF LONDON FOR PARIS, ROME AND OTHER EUROPEAN CITIES TO BE DELAYED FOR MORE THAN FOUR HOURS.
