The Belgian team Anderlecht defeated England's Southampton by two goals to nil in the first leg of their tie in the European Cup Winners' Cup football competition on Tuesday (2 March).

SYNOPSIS: The large home crowd in the Parc Astrid in Brussels was delighted with the result. Their team in the all white and playing from left to right, showed their supple skill and athletic ability. But Southampton weren't disgraced. They created plenty of scoring opportunities and an equalising goal was close at all times.

The Belgians' first goal came in the 30th minute of play through Ressel. It followed a series of fine, attacking moves by Anderletch.

Sothampton came particularly close to scoring later in the half when Mc Dougall turned sharply on a fine, square-pass from Channon and drove just wide of Ruiter's right hand post.

After that, both teams were fairly evenly matched and it still locked as though a draw was possible.

The two teams meet again in England next week for the second leg. Then, Southampton will have a difficult task to catch up on the goal count and cope with the changes in pace and direction.

The Belgians' victory was clinched nine minutes before the end of play. A slack piece of midfield play by Southampton gave away possession and allowed Resenbrink to make the final score two-nil.
