  • Description

The people of Spain today (Saturday) awaited the verdicts in the Burgos military trial of 16 Basque nationalists amid signs that the protected delay was intended to heat emotions on the left and the right. Lawyers for the accused, six of whom face possible death sentences, said they had still received no word when the trial judges would return a decision.

Among the people affected by the outcome are the relatives of the West German consul at San Sebastian, Eugen Beihl, kidnapped outside his home on December the first. Herr Beihl is being held by a group of Basque extremists as a hostage for the 16 prisoners who have been tried in Burgos.

It is feared that Herr Beihl could be killed if the court returns a death sentence that is carried out. It has been suggested that if the defendants are sentenced to death the sentence will be commuted by President Franco as a gesture of clemency in the Christmas period.

The search for Herr Beihl has continued almost ceaselessly since his abduction, and police patrols in San Sebastian have been intensified.
