  • Description

The new Greek Government formed after the success of the New Democracy Party in elections held on November the 20th was sworn in on Monday (28 November)
SYNOPSIS: The swearing-in took place at the Presidential Palace in Athens before Archbishop Serafim, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church.

It is the seventh Government to be formed by Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis during the 12 years that he has held office. He has been in politics for 43 years. It is also the second Government he has headed since the military Junta was overthrown in 1974 after it had ruled Greece for seven years.

The New Democracy Party of Mr. Karamanlis lost 42 seats in the elections but still remains the most powerful with 173 of the parliament's 300 seats. Among the Cabinet members who were sworn in was former Speaker, Constantine Papaconstaninou who has been appointed to the previously vacant post of Deputy Prime Minister-of a move seen as an attempt to direct the succession of leadership in the New Democracy Party. There have been three changes in the Cabinet among them the Foreign Minister Dimitrios Bitsios who was dropped altogether and replaced by the veteran politician Panayotis Papaligouris.
