  • Description

A library of tiny books collected by a Japanese doctor near Tokyo is attracting so many tourists, he now intends to exhibit them in London and Rome.

SYNOPSIS: Dr Toru Ogasawara keeps his collection in a library in Fujieda City, about 125 miles from Tokyo. Of his 4,000 books, 1,000 are always on display. It's probably the only exhibition of its kind in Japan.

Traditionally known as 'Mamehon' or 'books as big as a bean", these tiny volumes have been produced and collected in Japan for many centuries. But Dr Ogasawara's collection is different.

He has spent nearly 20 years gathering books in other languages - including English, Russian, Chinese, German, Italian and French. Many have to be read through a powerful magnifying glass.

This one contains the inaugural address given by US President John F. Kennedy. It was presented to Dr Ogasawara by an American ambassador on a visit to Japan. Many of the books are very valuable. This one, for instance, is valued at about one million yen - nearly 4,000 US dollars. To qualify for the doctor's library a volume must measure less than half the size of a postcard, but most of the books in his collection are far smaller than that. Subject matter ranges from a miniature copy of 'Life magazine through detective thrillers and classical works to books of Japanese wood-block prints.

This one is a work by the famous Soviet author Maxim Gorki and it's estimated that it would fetch around 2,000 dollars if put up for auction.

This contains a complete version of William Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

Some are less than one sixteenth of an inch (1.55 mm) in size. This one contains 32 pages.

Dr Ogasawar hopes to take his collection on tour around Europe in the near future.
