  • Description

Uruguayan President Juan Maria Bordaberry arrived in the Chilean capital, Santiago, on Wednesday (17 September) to attend Thursday's (18 September) Independence Day celebrations.

President Bordaberry was greeted at the airport by his Chilean Counterpart, General Augusto Pinochet. The two leaders--both of whom head right-wing military-backed governments--previously met when they attended the inauguration of Brazilian President Ernesto Geisel in Brasilia last year.

Welcoming his visitor, President Pinochet said that the Chilean government rejected all forms of totalitarianism and pledge itself to work for the total eradication of violence in South America.

In reply, President Bordaberry expressed hopes that Uruguay and Chile would develop "authentic liberty, real justice and genuine peace."
During his five-day visit, the Uruguayan leader is scheduled to hold a series of talks with Chilean leaders and to attend the formal signing of trade and integration agreements between the two countries.
