  • Description

DISAPPOINTMENT AT CAPE KENNEDY YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS WORKING ON AMERICA'S PROJECT APOLLO -- THE PROGRAMME DESIGNED TO LAND A MAN ON THE MOON BEFORE THE END OF THE DECADE.

THE SCHEDULED LAUNCHING OF THE FIRST MODEL OF THE APOLLO MOONCRAFT WAS POSTPONED WHEN TROUBLE WITH A FROZEN VALVE, COMBINED WITH STEADILY DETERIORATING WEATHER CONDITIONS, FORCED SCIENTISTS TO STOP THE COUNTDOWN JUST AN HOUR AND FIFTY-FIVE MINUTES BEFORE LAUNCHING TIME.

THE EIGHT-AND-A-HALF TON SPACECRAFT WAS TO HAVE BEEN HURLED ALOFT BY A POWERFUL SATURN I ROCKET.

THE SPACECRAFT IS A SIMPLIFIED MODEL OF THE SPACESHIP WHICH SCIENTISTS HOPE WILL CARRY THREE AMERICANS TO THE MOON BEFORE 1970. ABOARD THE ROCKET ARE A BATTERY OF TELEVISION AND MOVIE CAMERAS AND MORE THAN THIRTEEN HUNDRED MEASURING DEVICES. THE SPACECRAFT, DESCRIBED AS A "BOILERPLATE" MODEL, WAS EXPECTED TO ORBIT THE EARTH BETWEEN 110 AND 140 MILES UP (177 AND 225 KM) FOR ABOUT SEVEN DAYS BEFORE BURNING UP IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

THE LAUNCHING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW (THURSDAY).
