Background: Abidjan Port Authorities briefly held a South African freighter under "protective custody", last week. It happened as Ivorian President Felix Houphouet-Boigny called his now famous news conference in which he came out in favour of dialogue between black African states and South Africa.

While the ship, flying the South African flag, was under detention in Abidjan harbour, cameramen Bill Woodman shot this film of it. The ship, the Nahoon, was later given clearance to leave. Usually it flies a Panamanian flag, but the owners had not been able to register it in Panama before the start of the present voyage. The ship's South African captain, Dennis Downer of Durban, late said the ship had been taken into protective custody because the authorities feared student demonstrations against it.
