  • Description

A group of Palestinian children, some from war-torn Lebanon, are shrugging off the painful memories of recent months in the carefree atmosphere of a pioneer youth camp in the Soviet Union.

SYNOPSIS: They've been staying at the Artek camp on the shores of the Black Sea. Artek is the largest of 46,000 similar recreation camps for children scattered around the Soviet Union. At the start of the camp there was an impressive flag hoisting ceremony at which the Palestinian youngsters received a warm welcome from Soviet children.

The children were also presented with gifts. Some of them used to live in the Tel-al Zaatar refugee camp near Beirut which fell to rightist troops in August. Many saw their parents killed in the ferocious fighting leading up to the camp's takeover. Since then they've been cared for by relatives or the International Red Cross. More than 26,000 children visit the camp from the Soviet Union and 70 other countries.
