  • Description

UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF ARTIST SHIRO FUKURAI, CHILDREN AT THE MUNICIPAL SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND, AT KOBE, JAPAN, HAVE BEEN TAUGHT TO SCULPT IN CLAY THEIR IMPRESSIONS OF THEIR SIGHTLESS WORLD.

TEN YEARS AGO FUKURAI CONCEIVED THE IDEA OF HELPING BLIND CHILDREN FIND A CREATIVE OUTLET THROUGH SCULPTURE. SINCE THEN HE HAS BEEN TEACHING AT THE KOBE SCHOOL TO CHILDREN FROM THE AGE OF SIX UPWARDS.

HIS PUPILS HAVE HAD A REMARKABLY HIGH DEGREE OF SUCCESS IN COMPETITIONS. "I WANT EYES," A CLAY FIGURE OF A CHILD WITH SIGHTLESS EYES AND UPLIFTED ARMS WON AN AWARD FROM THE JAPANESE UNESCO ART EDUCATORS' ASSOCIATION. ANOTHER PUPIL, A BOY WHO IS BLIND AND DEAF, RECENTLY WON FIRST PRIZE IN A CREATIVE ART CONTEST SPONSORED BY THE JAPANESE MINISTRY OF WELFARE.
