NEARLY 50,000 MINEWORKERS - FILM SHOWS STRIKERS AT THE LUISENTHAL COLLIERY, NEAR SAARBRUCKEN, SCENE OF THE RECENT PIT DISASTER - ARE INVOLVED IN WEST GERMANY'S FIRST OFFICIAL STRIKE IN THE COALMINING INDUSTRY SINCE 1955.

    THE COAL MINERS' UNION IS ASKING FOR AN IMMEDIATE MINIMUM WAGE Increase OF 8 PER CENT, WHILE THE MANAGEMENT IS OFFERING AN IMMEDIATE INCREASE OF 6 PER CENT AND A FURTHER 2 PER CENT INCREASE IN OCTOBER.

    MINING IS THE SAAR'S PRINCIPAL INDUSTRY AND THE STRIKERS CARRIED THE SUPPORT OF THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. THE PIT MANAGEMENTS HAVE DECLARED THE STRIKE ILLEGAL ON THE GROUNDS OF ALLEGED IRREGULARITIES IN THE RECENT POLL IN WHICH THE MINERS DECIDED BY AN 87 PER CENT MAJORITY IN FAVOUR OF A STRIKE.

    ON MAY 8 THE MINERS' UNION SAID THE STRIKE WILL CONTINUE UNTIL AN ACCEPTABLE OFFER IS MADE.
