  • Description

At Security Council hearings in the United Nations, 4 May, the representative from Uruguay attacked the American military intervention in the revolt in the Dominican Republic.

On Tuesday, May 4, hearings in the Security Council at the United Nations centred on the present revolt in the Dominican Republic.

Uruguayan Representative, Ambassador Carlos Valazquez said the American position (called the Johnson Doctrine) is a new corollary of the Monroe Doctrine. He added, "it goes further than all norms and is incompatible with principles of self-determination".

Mr. Valazquez further added that the United States had dispatched troops to Santo Domingo without first consulting members of the Organization of American states and in violation of two articles of the O.A.S. charter. Both articles, he said, explicitly prohibit any type of intervention, direct or indirect for any reason whatsoever.

The Bolivian ambassador, Fernando Ortiz Sanz, in a brief statement, said "there is not a single American who will not deplore American intervention".

American ambassador Adlai Stevenson later said American measures are being taken to protect lives and political independence of the Dominican Republic.
