Background: Dr. Salvador Allende, Chile's Marxist President, returned to Chile on Saturday (3 September) after his diplomatic tour of Columbia, Ecuador and Peru.
Large crowds were gathered in Santiago to welcome him as he arrived by aircraft.
Dr. Allende, the Western world's first freely elected Marxist President, embarked upon his tour at the end of last month. His aim was to retain the friendship of Chile's neighbours and consolidate the five nation Andean economic grouping. During his stay in Ecuador, however, on the first leg of his tour, Ecuador government officials were annoyed by an unscheduled and unexpected private meeting he held with left wing student leaders. The students, who have openly opposed the Ecuador Government since it closed down the University of Quito after student riots and demonstrations last year, had earlier booed Ecuador President Jose Velasco but cheered President Allende when he arrived in the city.
