    Tanzania's second Vice President, Rashidi Kawawa said in Dar Es Salaam on Monday that the future of Africa depended on co-operation between African states leading to eventual unity. He was speaking to delegates from several African countries at the opening of a six-day African Adult Education Conference. Mr. Kawawa said adult education was of paramount importance of African nations as well as to progress as a continent.

    SYNOPSIS: Delegates from several African nations are in Dar es Salaam for a six day conference on adult education. Countries represented include Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, and the United Arab Republic.

    The second Vice-President of Tanzania, Mr. Rashidi Kawawa opened the proceedings. He told the delegates that the future of Africa depended on cooperation among African states leading to eventual unity. He said adult education was of paramount importance to the development of African nations, as well as to progress on the continental level. Later in the conference the delegates were given a chance to speak. Most of the delegated pointed out that the major factor which hindered the progress of adult education in their countries was the lack of funds. They also expressed the shortage of local staff for manning the adult education classes especially graduates.

    The conference was organised by the Institute of Adult Education in conjunction with the African Education Association.
