  • Description

Uruguay is building up its meat canning industry in an effort to sell more home-produced beef on foreign markets.

During the past year, meat sales abroad -- by far the largest and most important of Uruguay's exports -- have dropped off alarmingly, and the authorities last summer had to take emergency measures to step up home consumption of mounting frozen meat stockpiles.

Out of this same situation has grown the new canning industry. And it has met with some immediate success.

Two million tins of corned beef have been sold to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation.

This accounts for about a fifth of the meat canning industry's annual output. Factories, like the one filmed near Montevideo, are today processing about 100,000 head of cattle a year.

New supplies of tinplate are being imported to speed up development of the industry even further, and there should be an additional expansion in output when a shipment of 1,000 tons of tinplate arrives this month.
