    Democratic Presidential Candidate George McGovern last night (Saturday) announced in Washington that his new choice as vice-presidential running mate would be Sargent Shriver. Mr. Shriver - a former U.S. Ambassador to France and Peace Corps director - is the husband of Eunice Kennedy, sister of Edward and the late John and Robert Kennedy.

    The announcement ended six embarrassing days for the McGovern campaign organisation, as four prominent senators turned down the offer to replace Thomas Eagleton on the Democratic ticket in the November elections. These were Hubert Humphrey (who had lost the Presidential nomination to McGovern at the Convention in Miami), Abraham Ribicoff, Edward Kennedy and Edmund Muskie - the latter doing so last night because of "family obligations".

    Fifty-six-year-old Sargent Shriver heard Senator McGovern's radio and television announcement at the Hyannis Port (Massachussetts) home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Rose Kennedy. In his announcement, Senator, McGovern said:-
