Despite repeated efforts by the U.S. and the OAS to arrange a truce the junta forces of Brig. Gen. Antonio Ikbert Barreras continue to press forward into rebel-held areas of the capital city of Santo Domingo.
One of the first objectives sought by the junta forces was an unfinished apartment house held by the rebels. A tall building its height made it an ideal observation post. The rebels, supported by one of their few tanks, made a spirited defense. But the tank retreated in the face of heavy loyalist fire and was later reported knocked out. Then the apartment house was taken, giving the junta forces the observation once commanded by the rebels.
The junta forces then moved in on a church held by the rebels. With the support of automatic weapons, the troops ran to the steps of the church, battered down the door and opened fire on those inside. The objective was quickly taken and the government forces consolidated their positions.
