  • Description

A DEMOLITION TEAM OF IRISH ARMY ENGINEERS ACTING ON GOVERNMENT ORDERS BLEW UP THE STUMP REMNANT OF NELSON'S COLUMN IN DUBLIN DURING THE NIGHT. THE BLAST BLEW OUT A FLEW WINDOWS TOO - SOMETHING THAT WAS AVOIDED WHEN A TIME BOMB, MYSTERIOUSLY LAID, TOPPLED THE NELSON STATUE OFF THE COLUMN LAST WEEK.

THE DEMOLITION SQUAD BLEW UP 80 FEET (25 METRES) OF THE STUMP AT 03.30 (MONDAY), SENDING HUNDREDS OF TONS OF GRANITE DEBRIS INTO THE STREET. THEN WORKMEN SET TO AND BROKE UP THE PLINTH.

THE MONUMENT TO THE BRITISH ADMIRAL HERO WAS FOR LONG A SUBJECT OF CONTROVERSY AS A RELIEF OF BRITISH DOMINATION, AND IRISH REPUBLICANS WAGED A CONSTANT CAMPAIGN TO HAVE IT REMOVED.

BUT FOR TOURISTS THE 157-YEAR-OLD MONUMENT WAS A POPULAR ATTRACTION. CLIMBING 100 FEET UP TO THE OBSERVATION PLATFORM, IT PROVIDED A FINE PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE CITY.
