THE NEW 54 - MILE (86 KMS) LONG HIGHWAY THAT WILL LINK TAK WITH MAE SOD IN THE NORTH WEST THAILAND IS NEARLY COMPLETED. THE WORK OF AUSTRALIA AND THAI ENGINEERS, IT REPLACES A NARROW MOUNTAIN TRACK WHICH ALLOWS ONLY ONE WAY TRAFFIC ON ALTERNATE DAYS. MAE SOD, ON THE BURMESE BORDER, IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE ASIAN HIGHWAY THROUGH BURMA.

THE PRESENT TRACK IS FREQUENTLY WASHED AWAY BY RAIN AND LANDSLIDES AND BOGGY STRETCHES CAUSED BY THE ANNUAL MONSOONS MAKE THE JOURNEY EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THE MONSOON RAIN HAS HELD UP CONSTRUCTION WORLD FOR THREE TO FOUR MONTHS A YEAR. THE NEW HIGHWAY, AS WELL AS EASING THE JOURNEY TO MAE SOD MARKET, WILL PROVIDE ACCESS TO THE POTENTIALLY RICH MINERAL DEPOSITS BEING PROSPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS NEAR MAE SOD.

THERE ARE 25 AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERS AND TECHNICIANS FROM THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS HYDRO-ELECTRIC AUTHORITY OF COOMA, SOUTHERN NEW SOUTH WALES, AT WORK ON THE HIGHWAY. THE AUSTRALIANS ARE ALSO TRAINING THAI ENGINEERS AND TECHNICIANS ON THE WORK SITE.
