  • Description

LATEST NEWS FROM THE CONGO: THE STAFF OF THE U.S. CONSULATE IN BUKAVU, CAPITAL OF THE CENTRAL PROVINCE, HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO EVACUATE AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE. SOME REPORTS SAY THE TOWN HAS FALLEN INTO REBEL HANDS. MEANWHILE THE CONGO (BRAZZAVILLE) GOVERNMENT HAS CALLED FOR A COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY FROM THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (O.A.U.) TO LOOK INTO THE STRAINED RELATIONS BETWEEN IT AND THE EX-BELGIAN CONGO.

IN THE CONGO ITSELF, THERE IS GREAT ACTIVITY AT LEOPOLDVILLE AIRPORT, WHERE THE B 26 RECONNAISSANCE PLANES WHICH PRIME MINISTER TSHOMBE REQUESTED FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ARE BASED. THE AMERICAN PLANE REFUELLING IN OUR FILM IS A C-130 TRANSPORT. (IT'S REPORTED THAT THE PLANE SENT TO PICK UP THE U.S. BUKAVU CONSULATE STAFF 18 A C-130). APART FROM MILITARY ACTIVITY, LEOPOLDVILLE AIRPORT IS STILL RECEIVING COMMERCIAL FLIGHTS -- EXCEPT INTERNAL FLIGHTS SCHEDULED IN FROM STANLEYVILLE AND ALBERTVILLE WHICH HAVE FALLEN TO THE REBELS.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), PRIME MINISTER TSHOMBE HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE IN LEOPOLDVILLE, AT WHICH HE ANNOUNCED THAT GOVERNMENT TROOPS HAD KILLED M. PIERRE MULELE, LEADER OF THE REBEL FORCES IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE OF KWILU. THE PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCED THAT A BODY, BELIEVED TO BE THAT OF M. MULELE HAD BEEN FOUND IN A KWILU VILLAGE. BESIDE IT WAS A PASSPORT BEARING M. MULELE'S NAME. OTHER REPORTS HOWEVER, SAY THE REBEL LEADER IS SAFE ACROSS THE CONGO RIVER, IN BRAZZAVILLE.

THE FIRST OF THOUSANDS OF NATIONALS FROM THE CONGO (BRAZZAVILLE), MALI AND BURUNDI HAVE FLED BY FERRY ACROSS THE CONGO RIVER FROM LEOPOLDVILLE TO BRAZZAVILLE. ACCORDING TO A CONGOLESE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL, THEY ARE BEING EXPELLED BECAUSE OF THE AID THEIR GOVERNMENTS ARE GIVING TO THE REBEL MOVEMENT. THE NUMBER INVOLVED MIGHT BE AS HIGH AS 25,000, AND AS POLICE BEGAN ROUNDING THEM UP, DIPLOMATIC CIRCLES EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT THEIR GOVERNMENTS HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN PRIOR WARNING OF THE MOVE.
