Background: The Jamaican Prime Minister, Mr. Michael Manley, has been visiting Eastern Europe. Earlier this week, he met top Hungarian government officials in Budapest.

SYNOPSIS: The visit to Budapest was an important occasion for the Jamaican leader. It was the first time a Caribbean head of state, excluding cuban President Fidel Castro, has visited an Eastern European country.

Mr. Manley's first call was to Parliament buildings where he met the Hungarian Premier, Gyorgy Lazar, for talks. The Jamaican economy was one of the main items on the agenda. Mr. Manley has had to lead Jamaica through some difficult economic problems recently, which included devaluation last year and high unemployment. A major agreement was signed between Mr. Lazar and Mr. Manley which will involve Hungary helping to design an aluminium works for Jamaica.

The jamaican leader went to further talks with Communist Party leader Janos Kadar. There were about bilateral relations and the contacts between the two countries. The most important topic discussed during the three-day visit was the development of industrial co-operation. When he left Hungary, Mr. Manley stressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the talks.
