  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNEDY GAVE A PLEDGE YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THAT NO FINAL DECISION ON THE CONTROVERSIAL SKYBOLT MISSILE PROGRAMME WOULD BE TAKEN UNTIL AFTER HE HAD DISCUSSED IT WITH BRITAIN'S PRIME MINISTER, MR. MACMILLAN, IN THE BAHAMAS NEXT WEEK.

THE PRESIDENT, SPEAKING AT HIS PRESS CONFERENCE, WAS ASKED IF HE THOUGHT BRITAIN WOULD CONTINUE TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN WORLD AFFAIRS IF THE AIR-LAUNCHED SKYBOLT MISSILE WERE CANCELLED.

    PRESIDENT KENNEDY REPLIED:
(BRITAIN'S AIR FORCE HAS BEEN RELYING ON SKYBOLT TO MAINTAIN THE NATION'S INDEPENDENT DETERRENT, BECAUSE SOVIET DEFENCE SYSTEMS ARE FAST MAKING DIRECT BOMBING TECHNIQUES OBSOLETE.)
