KHALED: "Well, ah, we are faced with the problem of repatriation, rehabilitation of southern Sudan refugees -- we have something like a quarter of a million refugees living in the neighbouring African countries, particularly Uganda. Ethiopia, Zaire and Central African Republic. We have, ah, double this number, ah, of people who panicked away and took refuge in the forests. So, we have to cater for all those people, repatriate them and ???esettle them in their normal habitat."

INTERVIEWER: "Do you yourself, Doctor Khaled, have any idea how ling it will be before conditions in the Sudan become stable, and this kind of development programme properly established?"

KHALED: "Well I think it will take us at least a couple of years to finish with this problem of rehabilitation of refugees, a good tow years. And after that I feel with the money that will be released from the security operations in the south, ah, if it is deployed, and going to be deployed for development of the country both north and south. And with the amount of assistance we receive form friendly governments, and international organisations, I think the Sudan within the coming five to seven years will make history. This might sound optimistic, but given the situation which is pertaining today, and the possibilities and the potential, it is not overly optimistic."

He told newsmen that medical supplies, housing and the repatriation of 250-thousand Sudanese who had fled to Ethiopia Uganda and the central African Republic were his Government's ???iorities.

He said that just resettling the villages would probably ???st about twenty-five-million pounds.

Dr. Khaled also attended a meeting of United Nations Agencies directors in London, to explain to them the needs of his country - especially in the South.

SYNOPSIS: In London, Sudanese Foreign Minister Mansour Khaled described problems facing Sudan at the end of the 16-year civil war.
