    Murdered police chief, Guillermo Ernesto Pavon, was buried with full police honours in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on Tuesday (30 March). The chief inspector of operations of the federal police was gunned down by three hooded gunmen as he was leaving for work on Monday (29 March).

    The murder came only hours before General Jorge Videla was sworn in as the Argentine's new president following a military coup the previous Wednesday (24 March) deposing President Maria Estela Peron.

    Police say at least 20 people have been killed by terrorists in the Argentine since the coup.

    In Monday's incident Inspector Pavon and his chauffeur were leaving the inspector's home buy car when the road was blocked by a lorry from which the gunmen jumped out and fired into the police car.

    Inspector Pavon was killed instantly and his chauffeur was taken to hospital gravely injured from eight bullet wounds. He is now recovering.

    SYNOPSIS: There were full police honours for Chief Inspector Guillermo Ernesto Pavon who was buried in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, on Tuesday. The inspector was murdered by three hooded gunmen the previous day.

    Inspector Pavon and his chauffeur were leaving for work when their car was blocked by a lorry. Witnesses say the gunmen jumped out of the lorry and fired into the police car. Inspector Pavon was killed instantly and his chauffeur was taken to hospital seriously injured with eight bullet wounds.

    The murder came only hours before General Jorge Videla was sworn in as Argentina's new president following a military coup that deposed President Maria Estela Peron the previous Wednesday.

    Police say that at least twenty people have been murdered in political violence since the coup. Two other police officers and two security guards were among those killed.
