  • Description

RECENT GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS IN TOGO HAVE REVEALED THAT THE COUNTRY MAY HAVE UNTAPPED OIL RESOURCES IN ITS COASTAL REGION. SEDCO (UNION CARBIDE PETROLEUM TOGO) HAS JUST BUILT ITS FIRST DERRICK ABOUT 13 MILES (21 KILOMETRES) FROM THE CAPITAL, LOME.

IN THE PAST TOGO HAS RELIED MAINLY ON ITS AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS AND PHOSPHATE MINES TO BOOST THE ECONOMY. IF THE EXPLORATORY OIL RIG PROVES THAT THERE IS MARKETABLE SUPPLIES OF OIL OFF THE COAST IT WILL EVEN FURTHER ENRICH THE COUNTRY'S BRIGHT FUTURE.

THE TRIANGULAR RIG IS MANNED BY 55 TOGOLESE AND 27 TECHNICIANS FROM OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. THE DRILLING OPERATIONS COST SEDCO 20 THOUSAND DOLLARS (5 MILLION FRANCS) A DAY.
