    INTRODUCTION: A group of 77 developing countries represented at the United Nations Water Conference in Mar Del Plata, Argentina, has formed a permanent working body to formulate demands for financial aid from industrial states to develop Third World water supplies. The permanent committee is made up by delegates from 13 countries, including Yugoslavia and Nigeria. The Nigerian Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ibrahim el Yakub, told the conference on Monday (21 March) that the United Nations should set up a fund for water resources development in rural areas of developing countries.

    SYNOPSIS: Many speakers at the conference expressed Concern at the pressure on water supplies from growing populations, agriculture and industry, as the world's water supplies dwindled. The President of the Federal Agricultural Committee of Yugoslavia, Yvo Kistvak, told the conference that a catastrophic world water crisis can already be envisaged. Coordinated efforts to prevent it are imperative and the United Nations have both the position and the competence to deal with the problem, he said.
