  • Description

The transfer of Turkish Cypriot villagers from the Greek Cypriot-dominated south of the island to the Turkish-occupied north moved into its third day on Monday (11 August), when United Nations peacekeeping troops assisted the exodus of some 55 Turkish-Cypriots from the port of Larnaka.

Twenty-one more Turkish-Cypriots had elected to stay with the Greek-Cypriot community.

The transfer follows successful intercommunal talks in Vienna earlier this month resulting in an agreement to move some nine thousand Turkish-Cypriots from the Greek area to the north. In return, about 800 Greek-Cypriot refugees will be allowed to return to their home villages in the Turkish area.

Several Greek-Cypriot organisations have condemned the Vienna accord. There are an estimated 200,000 Greek-Cypriot refugees now in the south who fled their homes in the north during last year's bitter fighting. Many Greek-Cypriot leaders demands and the return of all refugees to their homes.
