  • Description

As Communist forces tightened their grip around the Khmer Republic capital, Phnom Penh, over the weekend, Khmer Rouge troops overran a Government police outpost about 6 miles (10 kms) west of the city. It was one of a series of attacks that the Communists carried out on all fronts near the capital.

The outpost was totally destroyed after heavy Communist mortar fire had driven the Government troops from their defensive positions. Heavy Government losses were reported.

The attack was typical of the type of the fighting that has taken place in recent weeks near Phnom Penh. The city's defence perimeter has been pushed to within three miles (kms) of the city centre, and the capital has been constantly shelled by Communist rockets.

As the Government's military situation continued to deteriorate, President Lon Nol was preparing to leave Phnom Penh for a foreign tour that would take him to Thailand, Indonesia and the United States where he will undergo medical treatment. Together with his wife and the Prime Minister, Long Boret, he flew out of Phnom Penh on Tuesday, arriving on the island of Bali that night.
