  • Description

WEST BERLIN POLICE DREW THEIR PISTOLS LAST NIGHT AS THEY TRIED TO CHECK A CROWD OF ABOUT 1,000 STUDENTS DEMONSTRATORS WHO WERE STORMING THE SCHILLER THEATRE DURING A PERFORMANCE.

NO SHOTS WERE FIRED DURING THE INCIDENT, BUT POLICE HAD THEIR PISTOLS AT THE READY. SEVERAL STUDENTS AND POLICE WERE INJURED BY FLAILING TRUNCHEONS AND BROKEN GLASS FROM THE THEATRE DOORS, WHICH WERE SMASHED BY COBBLESTONES THROWN BY THE DEMONSTRATORS.

THE STUDENTS WERE TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE SCHILLER THEATRE TO HOLD A TEACH-IN WITH THE AUDIENCE ON THE CONTROVERSIAL WEST GERMAN EMERGENCY LEGISLATION. THEIR ACTION WAS PART OF A MASSIVE NATIONWIDE PROTEST AGAINST THE LAWS BY TENS OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AND TRADE UNIONISTS.

LESS THAN 10 POLICEMEN WERE ON THE STEPS OF THE THEATRE WHEN THE STUDENTS MOVED IN. THE POLICE TRIED TO BEAT BACK THE DEMONSTRATORS WITH THEIR TRUNCHEONS BEFORE DRAWING THEIR PISTOLS TO KEEP THE CROWD AT BAY UNTIL REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVED.

HELMETED DEMONSTRATORS REPEATEDLY CHARGED THE THEATRE DOORS, THROWING STONES AS THEY APPROACHED THE LINE OF POLICE. SEVERAL STUDENTS WERE BLEEDING PROFUSELY FROM WOUNDS CAUSED BY FLYING GLASS FROM THE THEATRE DOORS. A POLICEMAN WAS CARRIED AWAY INJURED.

IN ANOTHER WEST BERLIN THEATRE, THE FREIE VOLKSBUEHNE, STUDENTS HELD PEACEFUL INTERVAL DISCUSSIONS WITH THE AUDIENCE ON THE EMERGENCY LEGISLATION, DUE TO RECEIVE ITS THIRD AND FINAL READING IN BONN TOMORROW (THURSDAY). POLICE GUARDED OTHER THEATRES IN THE CITY.
