  • Description

Mama Ngina Kenyatta, wife of the Kenyan President, laid the foundation stone for the Jamaa Home and Maternity hospital at a ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday (2 July).

The home will be run by the Edelvale trust and aims to provide a maternity hospital for 24 patients with ante-natal and post-natal care. A child welfare clinic is also to be established and the Jamaa home will extend facilities offered by the Edelvale trust to unmarried mothers. In all, nearly one hundred bed and cot places will be provided.

Mrs Kenyatta, who takes a keen interest in welfare work in Nairobi, addressed the guests at the ceremony and complimented the trust officials on their work in Kenya.

A speech of thanks was given by the Hon. Mwai Kibaki, MP who launched an appeal for funds for the project.

One of the first donations came from school-children in Denmark. Mrs Kai Johansen, the wife of the Danish Ambassador to Kenya, handed over the contribution to the trust.
