  • Description

Resident of the Dorchester Hotel during his London stay, Archbishop Makarios went for a car tour of the city, Feb 16., accompanied by a uniformed police officer. Shortly before he arrived back to his GBP21 a day hotel he went out again, to the British Foreign Office.

In the hotel lobby and in doorways outside, police, uninformed and plainclothes, guard the exiled Cyprus Church leader, and armed detectives vet all his visitors.

Makarios's London reception has been cool, though members of the Empire Loyalists warmed it up a little by driving round the hotel calling the archbishop "a murderer" over a loudspeaker. Police warned them and they eventually drove away.

At the Foreign Office it was a busy day, Feb 16. Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd was in conference with the Greek and Turkish Foreign Ministers. Later Mr. Lenox-Boyd, Colonial Secretary, joined them.

Sir Hugh Foot, Cyprus Governor, called on Archbishop Makarios during the day, the first time they have met since August of last year.
