  • Description

Japan's Yoko Gushiken successfully defended his World Boxing Association junior flyweight title, when he knocked out Thai challenger Montsayarm Mahachai in Beppu, Japan, on Sunday (9 October).

SYNOPSIS: In the opening stages, Mahachai, in the dark trunks, carried the fight to the champion. By round three, there was little in it. Gushiken, making the third defence of the title he won last October, had the edge. But the Thai, a former kick boxer, was always dangerous.

In the fourth round it was a different story. Gushiken tore into the challenger and pounded him with a barrage of lefts and rights. Mahachai wobbled, and a fierce left-right combination sent him to the canvas for the full count.

It was a magnificent performance by the 22-year-old Gushiken. He got a tremendous ovation from the Japanese fans as he received the world championships trophy. Gushiken's record now stands at 12 fights, 12 wins, seven by knock out.
