  • Description

If there was an annual award for ingenuity it is more than likely that the Kibbutz Gonen in Upper Galilee would take the prize.

At the end of 1973 the Israel Defence Forces left the people on the Kibbutz a souvenir -- a Soviet tank. During the days of the October war, the tank performed all the normal functions expected of it. It was a lethal weapon.

But then the T34 model tank came to the end of its destructive role. It rolled down the Golan Heights and landed in the fields of the Kibbutz Gonen.

This is where the people there took over. Kibbutz Gonen raises poplar trees for industrial use, producing out of the wood wooden sticks for icecreams, splints for broken limbs and other wooden items.

The tank was taken apart, the chassis painted yellow, and fitted with a hydraulic lift to make the pruning of trees easier.

The turret of the tank was painted red, white and blue and is now a favourite toy in the kindergarten of the kibbutz.

The Israelis then went a step further, leaving nothing to waste. The wheels of the tank were incorporated in turning a drum in the factory to clean and wax the wooden sticks.

The Kibbutz Gonen must be one of the few places to have a tank which is a tree pruning, stick making, children's toy.
