  • Description

Despite stringent police and troops protection a Cuban Army ammunition dump in the Havana Harbour area exploded June 26, reportedly killing two and injuring more than 200. Windows within five miles were shattered.

The Ministry of Health appealed throughout Havana for physicians and blood plasma, after the explosion took place in the Cayo Cruz, one of several inlets comprising Havana Harbour, in an underground ammunition dump, causing the college of the building above it. All electrical installations in the vicinity were destroyed.

Following the explosion, troops rushed into the area.

Hugh plate glass windows were smashed in the 23rd street shopping Centre, and women with brooms cleared glass and debris from pavements.

US Ambassador to Cuba, Philip Bonsal, immediately forwarded an offer from US navy to 'furnish any possible assistance' to the victims.
