Background: France reached the inter-zone semi-finals of the Davis Cup on Sunday (24 July) by taking an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Rumania in the European `A' zone final.

IIie Nastase defeated France's Patrick Proisy 6-4, 4-6, 8-6, 6-1 in the final singles match, but his win had no effect on the overall result. Davis Cup holders Italy, have reached the `B' final and will meet either Hungary or Spain to determine who plays France.

SYNOPSIS: Hero of the French team was their 35-year-old number one player, Francois Jauffret, here serving to Dimitru Haradau in the match which clinched the final for France. Jauffret defeated Rumania's number one, IIie Nastase, in five sets on Friday after trailing by two sets to nil at one stage. he quickly took the first set, 6-1, against Haradau on Sunday.

Jauffret swept to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Haradau fought back with a series of spectacular smashes and passing shots to equal at 3-all. However, Jauffret played steady tennis to finally take the set 6-4. France had earlier won the first two singles matches, but went down to the Rumanians in the doubles.

Haradau appeared to be taking charge in the third set, and led by three games to two at one state when rain stopped play for 10 minutes. The break in play seemed to affect the Rumanian Player more than it did Jauffret.

After the resumption, Jauffret overhauled Haradau's lead to lead himself 5-3.

The French player took the set and match 6-4 with a final smash from 48-15 on his own service.

France will now play the `B' Zone winner, still to be determined in the inter-zone semi-finals.
