Background: The Secretary General of the United Nations, Kurt Waldheim, spent the last day of his latest tour of Syria visiting United Nations positions in the disputed Golan Heights area and holding talks with the President of Syria, Hafez Al-Assad.
The Secretary General visited the United Nations camp, Camp Fawar, in the Golan Heights and spoke at length with the officers and several men in the camp.
The Syrian mandate of the U.N. observer force in Camp Fawar expires at the end of November.
After speaking with President Al-Assad Dr. Waldheim refused to reveal whether Syria had agreed to renew the mandate for the U.N. force which was set up in an attempt to keep peace in the area between Israel and Syria.
Recent reports suggest that the renewal of the U.N. mandate would depend on the Israeli replies to Syria's conditions which were revealed to Dr. Waldheim during his talks with President Al-Assad. Dr. Waldheim then left for Israel. He is expected to return to Syria and tell President Al-Assad of the Israeli replies later in the week.
