  • Description

ISRAELI LEADERS TODAY (THURSDAY) WARNED OF DANGERS AHEAD WITH THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC AS SECURITY FORCES IN THE OCCUPIED WEST BANK OF THE JORDAN BEGAN TO TIGHTEN SECURITY IN HEBRON, SCENE OF RECENT INCIDENTS IN WHICH CIVILIANS, TROOPS AND BORDER POLICE ARE REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN HURT. DURING A TOUR OF HEBRON, ISRAEL'S DEFENCE MINISTER, GENERAL MOSHE DAYAN, CLAIMED THAT EGYPTIAN FORCES MIGHT BOMB TEL AVIV IN ANY RENEWAL OF THE MIDDLE EAST WAR.

AS ISRAELI SECURITY FORCES MOVED INTO HEBRON MARKET PLACE, THEY ORDERED ALL MEN TO REPORT TO CHECKPOINTS FOR AN IDENTIFICATION PARADE.

THE MILITARY GOVERNOR OF THE AREA, MR. OFER, PROPOSED THAT HEBRON'S MAYOR JABARI, ACCOMPANY THE FORCES DURING A HOUSE-TO-HOUSE SEARCH OF THE MARKET PLACE.

IT WAS CLAIMED THAT IN A NUMBER OF SEPARATE INCIDENTS IN THE AREA, ISRAELI SOLDIERS AND BORDER POLICE HAD BEEN ATTACKED BY GUNFIRE, BOMBS AND HAND GRENADES. CIVILIANS ALSO HAD BEEN WOUNDED--INCLUDING 10 HURT WHEN A HAND GRENADE WRECKED A LORRY IN WHICH THEY WERE TRAVELLING LAST TUESDAY (22 JULY).

GENERAL DAYAN, WHO TOURED THE AREA WITH PART OF THE SECURITY FORCES, COMMENTED ON A SPEECH MADE BY EGYPT'S PRESIDENT NASSER LAST NIGHT. THE GENERAL SAID THAT HE DID NOT BELIEVE A RENEWAL OF THE MIDDLE EAST WAR WAS IMMINENT, BUT ADDED THAT PRESIDENT NASSER'S DECLARATION THAT THE CEASEFIRE NO LONGER EXISTED MUST BE TAKEN AT ITS FACE VALUE.

IN HIS SPEECH TO THE ARAB SOCIALIST UNION IN CAIRO, PRESIDENT NASSER HAD SAID THAT EGYPT WAS READY TO GO TO WAR TO REGAIN THE SINAI TERRITORY OCCUPIED BY ISRAEL DURING THE SIX-DAY WAR IN JUNE, 1967.
