  • Description

AS NON-STOP, TORRENTIAL RAIN SWELLED ALREADY OVERFLOWING RIVERS IN KENYA, SWEEPING AWAY ROADS AND BRIDGES, THE GOVERNOR, SIR PATRICK RENISON, APPEALED TO THE ROYAL AIR FORCE FOR TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT AND TO THE BRITISH ARMY FOR HELICOPTERS AND RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT TO ORGANISE FOOD DROPS TO 250,000 AFRICANS SUFFERING FROM THE DOUBLE BLOW OF FAMINE AND FLOODS. SIR PATRICK DESCRIBED THE SITUATION ON NOVEMBER 15 AS "A GRAVE EMERGENCY."
THE CAPITAL OF NAIROBI IS ISOLATED FROM THE MAIN SEAPORT OF MOMBASA, THE FLOODS CUTTING BOTH ROAD AND RAIL LINKS. OTHER MAIN ROADS TO TANGANYIKA AND THE NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT ARE NOW ALL IMPASSABLE. THE WORST HIT AREA IS THE COASTAL TANA RIVER BASIN WHERE WHOLE VILLAGERS HAVE BEEN SWEPT AWAY. SOME 40,000 MASAI TRIBESMEN, AMONG THE HARDEST HIT IN THE MONTHS-LONG DROUGHT THAT PRECEDED THE FLOODS, ARE CUT OFF IN THE KAJIADO DISTRICT. THOUSANDS OF KAMBA TRIBESMEN IN THE MACHAKOS DISTRICT NEAR NAIROBI ARE ALSO IN A SERIOUS PLIGHT. EMERGENCY RELIEF HEADQUARTERS SET UP IN EAST AFRICA COMMAND OFFICES IN THE CAPITAL FACE THE PROBLEM OF FLYING 120 TONS OF FOOD A DAY TO MACHAKOS AND TEN TONS A DAY TO KAJIADO UNTIL THE ROADS ARE RE-OPENED.

MAJOR-GENERAL R. GOODWIN, GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING EAST AFRICA COMMAND, WHO HAS PLACE EVERY AVAILABLE ARMY HELICOPTER ON RESCUE WORK MAY CALL FOR EXTRA AIRCRAFT FROM ADEN AND CYPRUS. A ROYAL NAVY ASSAULT TANK LANDING SHIP, HMS STRIKER, IS SAILING NORTH FROM MOMBASA TO THE TANA RIVER BASIN WITH AN ASSAULT SQUADRON OF ROYAL MARINES WHO ARE TO CARRY FOOD SUPPLIES IN LANDING CRAFT UP THE SWOLLEN RIVER.
