  • Description

India and Czechoslovakia signed a long-term economic co-operation agreement on Wednesday (December 5), at the climax of talks between Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi and visiting Czechoslovak Communist Party leader Gustav Husak.

Following up on the visit of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev a week earlier -- he had urged the idea of collective security in Asia -- Wednesday's joint declaration called for the development of broadbased cooperation among Asian states to achieve peace and stability.

Under the financial arrangements of the cooperation deal, Czechoslovakia has agreed to lend India 800 million rupees (about 45 million sterling) in order to buy capital goods and components.
