  • Description

THE NUCLEAR POWERED CRUISERS, U.S.S. "LONG BEACH", THE FIRST COMMISSIONED WARSHIP TO BE ARMED SOLELY WITH MISSILES, ARRIVED AT LE HAVRE, FRANCE, ON JAN 20, AFTER VISITING BREMERHAVEN IN WEST GERMANY. THIS IS THE FIRST VISIT OVERSEAS BY THE CRUISER, COMMISSIONED IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR. AFTER A WEEK'S VISIT TO THE FRENCH PORT, THE "LONG BEACH" WILL RETURN TO THE UNITED STATES BY WAY OF BERMUDA.

TERRIER AND TALOS GUIDED MISSILES ARE CARRIED BY THE "LONG BEACH" AS WELL AS ASROC (ANTI-SUBMARINE ROCKETS). THE TERRIER, A ONE AND A HALF TONS SUPERSONIC SOLID FUEL RADAR-GUIDED VEHICLES, IS A DEFENCE MISSILE AGAINST SURFACE AND AIR TARGETS AT CLOSE AND INTERMEDIATE RANGES. TWO DUAL LAUNCHERS ARE CARRIED, BOTH FUNCTIONING AUTOMATICALLY. THE TALOS, WEIGHING THREE AND A HALF TONS, IS LETHAL AGAINST TARGETS AT EXTENDED RANGES AND EXTREME HEIGHTS.

ASROC PROVIDES "LONG BEACH" WITH A RAPID LONG-RANGE DETECTION SYSTEM AGAINST SUBMARINES, QUICKLY COMPUTES THEIR COURSE AND SPEED, AND LAUNCHES A ROCKET PROPELLED BALLISTIC MISSILE AT THE TARGET.

WITH NUCLEAR POWER, THE "LONG BEACH" HAS ALMOST LIMITLESS RANGE. THE CRUISER IS WELL EQUIPPED WITH FACILITIES FOR THE COMFORT OF THE 960 OFFICERS AND MEN ABOARD, INCLUDING A TAILOR'S SHOP AND SODA FOUNTAIN, ITS OWN RADIO STATION, AND CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION.
