  • Description

THE IVORY COAST HAS LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN TO VACCINATE CHILDREN AGED BETWEEN SIX MONTHS AND 15 YEARS AGAINST YELLOW FEVER. WITH VACCINE SUPPLIES FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION, FOUR MOBILE TEAMS HAVE BEGUN TOURING THE COUNTRY FOR THE ONE-MONTH LONG CAMPAIGN.

AS LATE AS 1946, THE IVORY COAST WAS STILL CALLED THE "WHITE MAN'S GRAVE", AND THE KILLER WAS YELLOW FEVER. BOTH AFRICAN AND EUROPEAN HAD NO CHANCE OF RECOVERY AND DEATH CAME WITHIN FOUR TO SIX DAYS.

THE LAST MAJOR OUTBREAK IN THE IVORY COAST WAS IN 1949, WHEN SEVERAL HUNDRED CASES WERE REPORTED. SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN VACCINATION CAMPAIGNS.

BUT DAKAR, IN SENEGAL, HAD 300 CASES REPORTED LAST YEAR.

YELLOW FEVER IS A VIRUS TRANSPORTED BY A MOSQUITO SMALL ENOUGH TO PENETRATE THE FINEST NETTING, AND MUCH SMALLER THAN THE MALARIA MOSQUITO.

THE FOUR MOBILE VACCINATION UNITS NOW OPERATING IN THE IVORY COAST CAN COPE WITH 2,000 CHILDREN A DAY. EACH UNIT IS EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST "PISTOL" INJECTORS.
