  • Description

South Vietnamese troops withdrew to Chon Thanh, over 50 kms northwest of Saigon, on Thursday (7 April) after failing to reopen the read north.

The road had been locked during the night by communist troops as their offensive into South Vietnam across the Demilitarised Zone continued.

An American helicopter, forced down by enemy fire, landed not far from the town, and while mechanics worked to repair the machine, the pilot immediately requested a rescue evacuation.

After securing the blades of the downed helicopter, A giant Chinook arrived to airlift the crew and their machine southward.
