    In Italy two people have been killed and others injured after a train collided with a truck at a railroad crossing 25 kilometres south of Rome on Thursday (4 May).

    SYNOPSIS: The accident happened in the Alban Hills, south of Rome, leaving wreckage from both the train and truck strewn over a wide area. It was the third major train accident in Italy in three weeks. Last month more than 45 people died when two trains collided near Bologna in Milan a goods train was nearly destroyed by urban guerrillas on Thursday. Rescue teams and volunteers arrived at the scene quickly but several of the carriages were already virtually burnt out.

    The truck was carrying a load of coffee and was pushed more than 200 yards along the rails in the collision.

    The two killed were the engine driver and the train conductor. The truck driver escaped death, but was reported to be in a serious condition in hospital. Fourteen other people were taken to hospitals in the area with bruises, burns and cuts. The train, linking rome with the small town of Velletri, was carrying 40 passengers. Railway officials said the accident was caused by failure of the automatic barriers.
