  • Description

ZBYNEK HUBAC OF THE SOVIET UNION YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TOOK THE HONOURS IN THE INTERNATIONAL MEN'S SKI-JUMPING CONTEST AT MITTERNDORF IN WEST GERMANY. THE COMPETITION HAD BEEN DELAYED BY A DAY AFTER HIGH WINDS BROUGHT THE NORWEGIAN JUMPER RONALD JENSEN CRASHING DOWN IN A SPECTACULAR FALL.

COMPETITORS YESTERDAY HAD TO CONTEND WITH BAD CONDITIONS AS THEY MADE THEIR SPECTACULAR LEAPS AT THE HIGHEST AND LONGEST SKI-JUMP IN THE WORLD.

THE WORLD RECORD IS HELD BY REINHOLD BACHLER OF AUSTRIA, WHO CAME IN SECOND IN YESTERDAY'S COMPETITION. JUMPERS AT MITTERNDORF REACH HEIGHTS AND LENGTHS FAR GREATER THAN THOSE IN OLYMPIC COMPETITION. THEIR AVERAGE SPEED JUST BEFORE THEY LEAVE THE JUMPING PLATFORM IS 70 MILES (114 KILOMETRES) AN HOUR. FOR A JUMP COVERING 153 YARDS (140 METRES) SKIERS FALL THROUGH A DISTANCE OF 76 YARDS (70 METRES).

AND SOMETIMES THEY REALLY DO FALL. RONALD JENSEN WAS ONE OF THE FIRST COMPETITORS TO BRAVE THE HIGH WINDS ON SATURDAY. A GUST SNATCHED AT HIS SKIS, AND HE TOPPLED OVER TO PLUNGE INTO THE SNOW.

A HELICOPTER CARRIED HIM TO HOSPITAL AT NEARBY BAD ISCHL, WHERE DOCTORS SAID HE SUFFERED CONCUSSION AND NUMEROUS GRAZES AND BRUISES.
