  • Description

On Wednesday (9 August), Singapore celebrated the seventh anniversary of its independence with a mammoth parade involving some 25,000 people drawn from all sections of the community.

President Benjamin Sheares arrived to begin the parade with an inspection of Singapore's crack infantry regiment. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, cabinet ministers and heads of diplomatic missions were also present.

Three French Alouette helicopters took part in a fly-past of the Singapore Air Defence Command, preceding military contingents which -- as in previous years -- were given precedence in the parade over educational groups such as Singapore University, Singapore Polytechnic and the Chinese language Nanyang University.

The one-and-a-half hour parade, which was watched by an o???imated 100,000 spectators, also included floats depicting national ruggedness and harmony, industrial safety and a multi-cultural society. Traditional lion and dragon dances followed the marchers to close the march-post.
