  • Description

Hundreds of troops were assembled at the military cemetery in El-Alia, near Algiers, for the funeral of Col. Jean Pierre, commander of the Fourth Foreign Legion Parachute Regiment, recently.

The Colonel had been shot in the face by a machine gun while watching the progress, from an helicopter, of a battle between men of his regiment and Algerian Libration terrorists, near the Tunisian-Algerian border.

High-ranking officers of the Algerian garrison, including Gen. Salan, the military commander in Algeria, Gen. Massu, the paratroop officer who was an instigator of the Algerian break away from Paris, and Col. Pierre's widow, were present at the funeral.
