  • Description

CONTINUOUS RAIN IN MANY PARTS OF GHANA CONTINUES TO CAUSE HAVOC AND CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE - MAINLY TO RURAL AREA. IN THE KETA DISTRICT, IN THE VOLTA REGION, RISING WATERS ALMOST ISOLATED KETA AND THE SURROUNDING VILLAGES. SOME OF THE WORST HIT AREAS ARE TEGBI VUI, BLEKUSU, HOVIE AND VODZA.

AT KEDZI A BAILEY BRIDGE IS BEING THREATENED AND ONLY THREE-TONNES CN USE IT BECAUSE FLOOD WATERS HAVE WEAKENED THE STRUCTURE. IN KETA ITSELF PARTS OF THE MARKET ARE COMPLETELY UNDER WATER AND SOME OF THE STREETS HAVE FLOOD WATERS AS HIGH AS THREE FEET (ONE METRE). WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE TO WADE THROUGH THE FLOOD TO REACH THE MARKET AND THE NEAREST STANDPIPE FOR CLEAN WATER. IT'S DIFFICULT FOR CHILDREN TO GET TO SCHOOL.

FOR MOST THE SITUATION IS TRAGIC - MEANING LOSS AND HARDSHIP. BUT TO THE CHILDREN THE FLOODS HAVE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUN - WHICH INCLUDES FISHING IN THE STREET WATERS FROM THEIR WINDOWS.

FIRST OFFICIAL ESTIMATES PUT THE NUMBER OF HOMELESS AT 1,000. TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION IS BEING PROVIDED AT AN OLD POLICE STATION AND A FORMER PRISON.
