  • Description

SABOTEURS IN SOUTH AFRICA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BROUGHT DOWN A POWER PYLON ABOUT FIFTEEN MILES FROM JOHANNESBURG, DISRUPTING POWER SUPPLIES AND RAILWAY SERVICES OVER A WIDE AREA.

THE ACT OF SABOTAGE WAS ONE OF AN INCREASING NUMBER REPORTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS AND ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL. AN ENGINEER WITH THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY COMMISSION DESCRIBED IT AS "A PROPER PROFESSIONAL JOB" AND HE SAID THAT THE SABOTEURS HAD CHOSEN THE MOST VULNERABLE PYLON.

IT WAS ONE WHERE THE POWER LINES TURNED A CORNER AND THE WEIGHT OF THE OVERHEAD LINES BROUGHT IT DOWN WHEN THE CONCRETE BASES WERE BLASTED TO FRAGMENTS. THE CHARGES WERE SO POWERFUL THAT CRATERS FOUR FEET DEEP WERE BLASTED AT THE PYLON FOUNDATIONS.

IN THE PAST YEAR, THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 16 ATTEMPTS TO BLOW UP PYLONS AND THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS BOMB ATTEMPTS AGAINST SMALL GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC OFFICES. IN GENERAL, THE SABOTEURS HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL.
