  • Description

ABOUT 150 PEOPLE DEMONSTRATED TODAY (FRIDAY) OUTSIDE THE MATSERUD TENNIS COURT IN OSLO WHERE NORWAY AND SOUTH AFRICA WERE PLAYING A MATCH IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE DAVIS CUP. THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED PLACARDS DENOUNCING APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA. POLICE, SOME ON HORSEBACK, KEPT THE DEMONSTRATORS FIVE HUNDRED YARDS (457 METRES) FROM THE COURT.

THE HEAVY POLICE GUARD AROUND THE COURT WAS ON DUTY TO PREVENT A REPETITION OF AN INCIDENT LAST YEAR WHEN NORWAY PLAYED SOUTH AFRICA. ON THAT OCCASION, THE DEMONSTRATORS STORMED THE COURT AND TORE DOWN THE NET. WHEN THEY LAY DOWN ON THE COURT, OFFICIALS SUSPENDED THE MATCH.

THE NORWEGIAN ACTION AGAINST APARTHEID (NAMA) ORGANISATION SENT A LETTER TO THE NORWEGIAN TENNIS ASSOCIATION EARLIER THIS MONTH ASKING THEM TO CANCEL THE MATCH AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA. THE LETTER SAID THAT APARTHEID IN SPORT WAS PRACTICED IN SOUTH AFRICA, AND THAT THE SYSTEM HAD PRACTICALLY NO SUPPORT IN NORWAY. IT SAID ONE OF THE IDEALS IN SPORT WAS TO PROMOTE BROTHERHOOD AND UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN PEOPLES, WHILE APARTHEID CAUSED BAD FEELING AND UNREST.

THE DEMONSTRATORS PLAN TO RESUME THEIR DEMONSTRATION TOMORROW (SATURDAY) EVENING.
