  • Description

New Rose, County Wexford-the ancostral home town of President Kennedy, and the scene of infections Irish gaiety January 20 as the population-and hundreds from neighbouring towns- celebrated his inauguration as President of the United States.

Irish and American flags hung from windows over the streets as, headed by torch bearers, a large procession sang, danced and cheered its way through the town. Three bands provided the music and they were supplemented by the strains of violins and accordions at every corner.

Colonel O'Brien, Military Attache to the American Embassy, was presented with an illuminated address to President Kennedy. It began: "God protect you dear Mr President. On this great day of you inauguration, the people of New Ross and Dunganstown, the home of your ancestors, extend to you their heartfelt congratulations.May Almighty God grant to you a successful first term of office".

In reply, Colonel O'Brien said it was an honour and an privilege to represent the United States Ambassador to Ireland who, unfortunately, was out of the country on official business. He thanked then for their wonderful tribute to a descendant are Indian.

The highlight of the evening was when a personal address from President Kennedy to New Ross- once a thriving port was read to thousands gathered along the quays.

Lawrence Kennedy, the President's great-grandfather, set sail for America 110 years ago when New Ross was threatened by famine. Other Kennedys stayed in Ireland. Third cousin Joseph-who led the torchlight procession - lives in a farmhouse very similar to the one Lawrence Kennedy left four generations before.
